The Emmy Award-winning documentary Bearden Plays Bearden is the culmination of a unique three-year collaboration between acclaimed African-American artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988) and filmmaker Nelson E. Breen. The film is conceived as a cinematic collage evocative of Bearden's work, delving into Bearden's sources of inspiration and the events that drove him to be an artist. Bearden Plays Bearden is narrated by James Earl Jones and features appearances by poet Ntozake Shange, mythologist Joseph Campbell, and writer Albert Murray.
